Storing Festive Décor So It Lasts for Years

Everything we make is built to come out again next year. Whether it actually does depends almost entirely on the fortnight after the festival ends.
Clean before storing, not after
Marigold stains, oil marks and lamp soot all set with time. Anything you leave on the fabric in September will be permanent by the following August. Wipe, spot-clean, and let it dry fully.
Dry fully — this is the one that matters
Packing anything even slightly damp is how mildew starts, and mildew does not come out. Give every piece a full day in the shade. Direct sun is not a shortcut; it fades colour and makes fabric brittle.
Store flat, dark and loose
- Flat or loosely rolled — hard creases become permanent breaks in stiffened fabric
- Out of direct light, which fades dye faster than any amount of use
- In cloth or a ventilated box, never sealed plastic, which traps moisture
- Heaviest at the bottom, so nothing is crushed under its own weight for a year
Photograph the setup before dismantling
The most useful thing you can pack away is a picture of how it all went together. Next year the assembly takes minutes instead of an evening of guessing.
